A month ago I really had no idea who Big Bang was. Unaware of the group’s name, I had listened to some of their music on a Podcast I’d download. Boy, have I come a long way in a few weeks! Now Big Bang is just about all our family is listening to, and I must say it’s a welcome relief from The Wiggles and The Backyardigans.
Big Bang is a Korean hip-hop group that made it’s debut in August 2006. Leading up to the debut, the group’s formation was shown on the TV series, “Big Bang Documentary.” The five guys who make up Big Bang are: G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P., Daesung, and Seungri.
Yes, Big Bang has been mentioned on this blog before, a couple of weeks ago when I focused on the Shouts of Reds song for the World Cup. At that point, the obsession in our house was with the song, not the band. Now our son knows several of their songs, has a favorite band member (Daesung), and can sometimes tell them apart by their voices.
While labeled a hip-hop group, Big Bang’s music is actually pretty diverse with some songs being more rock or r&b inspired. “Tell Me Goodbye,” which is one of their most recent releases, is one of my favorites. Last year the group was on hiatus, and a couple of the guys released solo albums. G-Dragon released a solo album titled Heartbreaker and Taeyang released a mini-album titled Hot.
I should warn you that if you’re family gets into Big Bang, you won’t find their CDs at your local music store (at least, most likely you won’t). But you can find their music via the Web. YesAsia.com has some of their CDs for sale. If you have iTunes, you can find some Big Bang songs on K-pop Podcasts. Or do a search, and you’ll likely find some music you can download. And you can enjoy their videos via the official YG Entertainment channel on YouTube.com.
